DMS Youth Voice Solo Performance Showcase

Welcome to Durham Music Service’s Youth Voice page.

Back in 2022, a group of our young musicians formed our very first Youth Voice Committee to help us become more aware of how our pupils feel about DMS and to share ideas to help us move forward.  We met 4 times last academic year and members fed back to our Senior Leadership & Management Teams on our lessons, opportunities, music groups along with sharing ideas on youth run projects.  Alongside being a committee member, our young people are given the opportunity to gain skills within different areas of music other than playing an instrument.  Last year, our members took part in workshops focusing on Music Technology.  They learned about setting up PA systems, how they work and how to balance the sounds from each instrument which would help them support their schools during performances.  This year we are working on conducting skills where members will be able to put these new skills into practise through supporting our music groups, and groups that are run in school or in the community.

Moving forward to 2024 and our committee has grown and has more than double our original members.  They have chosen to run two projects this year:

A Music Swap Shop where anyone can donate music books to be distributed to pupils who can make use of them - link to information on our website: DMS Youth Voice Music Swap Shop | Durham Music Trust

Our other main project this year is a Solo Performance Showcase.  This will be held at Ushaw College on Sat 29^th June 1-5pm.  Our members wanted to give all pupils of any instrument, style or ability the chance to perform as a soloist allowing them the opportunity to gain confidence in a supportive environment surrounded by family, friends and other pupils.  The committee members themselves wanted to be involved in giving feedback so they could share their own experiences with each other.

10 years old and under

11 – 13 years old

14 – 15 years old

16 – 18 years old
